What is a Security Alarm System and How It Works?

Rav Fong • December 21, 2021

In a perfect world, security alarm systems would cease to exist since there’s no need for security barriers that work to prevent unlawful action or behaviour from happening. However, that’s not usually the case because we don’t live in a perfect world and a security alarm system works to do just that – to provide safety and maintain security.

For this reason, all security alarm systems in the world work on the same principle of securing entry points, like doors and windows, as well as in spaces that contain valuables such as art, money, computers, etc.

If you haven't got a security alarm system for your home, workplace, or commercial premises in Malaysia, continue reading to learn about the security alarm system and how it works as well as the benefits of having a home security system.

What is a security system?

As the name suggests, a security system consists of several electronic components or we call it 'security alarm accessories' that communicate with a central control panel, working together to protect a home against potential intruders and environmental disasters such as fire and flood. Such components may include:

 - Control panel

 - Sensors (motion, vibration, entry)

 - Siren or alarm

 - Security cameras

 - Wireless transmitters

 - Yard signs and window stickers

 - Glass-break sensors

 - Smoke and CO detectors

How does a security alarm system work?

A security alarm system typically works based on connectivity between the transmitters, sensors, and control panel which are installed in a strategic location somewhere in the home, workplace, or commercial premises. Let's take a look at some of the components mentioned above.

Control panel

The control panel is the central point of command for any security alarm system. It uses radio signals to communicate with your security sensors, you, and the monitoring centre. Modern security alarm system control panels typically feature a built-in keypad or another way to manually arm and disarm the system.

Sensors

Sensors play an integral role in any security alarm system. Available in a range of sizes and powered by electricity or battery, sensors are usually placed inside and outside the house, workplace, or commercial premises; on doors that lead to and from the house as well as easily accessible windows, especially those at the ground level.

Siren or alarm

Since we typically rely on cues to take action, the security alarm system is usually equipped with a high-decibel siren or alarm that’s loud enough for you or your neighbours to hear. The alarm also serves to alert the people inside the premises that a problem has occurred. At the same time, they’re shrill enough to send a burglar running.

Security cameras

Available in both wired and wireless configurations, security cameras can be a part of your security alarm system to monitor hard to see areas of your property, remote buildings or entry points, both exterior and interior. They can also be accessed remotely on your computer, smartphone, and tablet.

Yard sign and window stickers

On the surface, the yard sign and window stickers might seem like a marketing tool for security alarm system companies but they play important roles in keeping burglars off your property. As such, you’re telling everyone including burglars that your property is professionally protected and it wouldn’t be wise to break in.

What happens when there’s an intrusion?

A security alarm system is designed to perform certain tasks when there’s a breach in the system. For instance, someone breaks into your home while you’re away on holiday and it triggered the alarm. Depending on the type of security alarm system you’re using, you might be notified of the break-in or it could alert your security alarm provider.

Either way, the high-decibel alarm will alert your neighbours, and your security alarm provider may attempt to communicate with you via the control panel if it’s set up for two-way voice communication or the contact details listed on the account.

What are the benefits of having a home security system?

Studies have shown that properties with a security alarm system are less likely to be burglarized compared to those without one. This is because burglars often target properties that seem to be less guarded.

That said, there are several benefits of having a home security system:

Increasing the sense of security and comfort

Knowing that your property is protected against potential intruders.

 Protecting your valuables

Because we all know someone who has lost their valuables due to a home invasion.

Allowing remote monitoring access to your home

So that you can monitor the security cameras installed throughout your home, as well as control the locks or other smart devices.

Helping you to keep tabs on your children

As they get home from school or head out to meet their friends.
